Turquoise Maiden, Double by Kateri Sanchez

$ 135.00

A turquoise maiden figure with a slight golden brown matrix depicting a corn maiden on each side - carved by Kateri Sanchez. The maidens share a whirl hair style Kateri inlaid a gold-lip face on one side and a whiter mother-of-pearl on the opposite; both with jet inlaid features. The maidens share a "whirl" hairstyle, more accurately known as the squash blossom or butterfly whorl - created by wrapping a young unmarried woman's hair in a figure-eight pattern around a U-shaped wooden frame. The resulting circular coils are worn on each side of the head and resemble the wings of a butterfly or the petals of a squash blossom. Kateri has nicely incised the corn rows then created a fringe shawl that has dragonflies and star bursts incised on it - inlaid with jet pigment. Maidens symbolize abundance, fertility and feminine energy and corn maidens are revered in Zuni for giving up their life to help sustain the Zuni tribe with their corn bodies.
