Malachite Bear by Loren Tsalabutie
A striking viridian green and teal veined malachite happy bear carved by Loren Tsalabutie to balance on its right foot as it looks to its right side with turquoise inlaid eyes. The front feet are poised upright in a somewhat ballet like position - though we know every component of the carving is created to help counterbalance the raised left foot. Loren's deceased father; Jeff Tsalabutie - was one of the first carvers to create animals with raised feet. Note: there is a crystalline vein that starts on the top of the head - to the left of the bear's ear - then travels downwards to the bear's right foot. The Zuni believe the bear is endowed with curative powers, strength, adaptability and courage - powers that can influence both the spiritual and physical realm.
