Loren Tsalabutie
Mother-of-Pearl Bird, Swan by Loren Tsalabutie
Our first created by Loren Tsalabutie - the second one we are told that he has ever made. This substantial sized mother-of-pearl swan has a presence - we love how the bird shimmers as it catches the light. Loren has inlaid the eyes with turquoise then incised lines on the wings and tail - leaving the rest of the carving smooth and polished creating a lovely contrast. Swans don't typically figure into Zuni myths though swans are associated with the sky in some tribal traditions, and as with other white waterfowl, swan feathers are considered a symbol of harmony and spirituality.
