Abalone
Abalone is a material that makes for some very unique Zuni Fetishes. This shell comes from a type of marine snail or mollusk. It can be found in quite a few coastal waters around the world, though it typically likes the colder waters of Australia, South Africa, Japan, and Western North America. This shell has an interesting layered composition which provides very strong protection for the snail. The inner part of abalone shell is a spectacular rainbow of iridescent colors. Most often, you will see Zuni artists carve fish out of abalone, or you may see it used as an inlay.
