Antler Frog by Raymond Tsalate
An adorable cream and slightly peach tinged antler frog carved by Ray Tsalate in an anthropomorphic pose - standing upright on its hind legs looking up at the viewer with gold-lip eyes and malachite pupils that are inlaid to the raised eye sockets. The frog has eight Kingman turquoise and thirteen Mediterranean coral hand made dots inlaid on the top of the face - inlaid on and around the porous marrow portion of the antler. There are dots inlaid to the front legs of the frog as well - that are held closely together in a beseeching fashion. The frog wears a kilt wrap that has incised triangles on the top half portion with a lapis pigment inlaid line followed by a cross hatch pattern incised at the bottom of the kilt. We have been told by Ray that triangles represent clouds. In Zuni tradition, carvers view the frog as a powerful rain-bringing fetish and a symbol of water, fertility, and abundance. The Zuni believe the frog is a reminder that we are all the same - development wise - we begin as tiny fishlike creatures in the womb then we evolve from swimmers to creatures of the land. The frogs sings its song reminding us of our watery beginning.
