Nutria Travertine Maiden Figure by Rhoda Quam, Deceased

$ 215.00

A multi hued brown Nutria travertine maiden figure carved by the deceased Rhoda Quam - who sadly died in 2002. Rhoda was a cousin to Sandra Quandelacy and the two were close in age so grew up together learning to carve at the same time. At the top on both sides are four maidens with water jars balanced on top of their heads with two smaller girls inlaid below them. The faces are all inlaid with stones and shell featuring turquoise, melon shell, spiny oyster and gold-lip - then jet pigment is inlaid to the roughly to the maidens' incised eyes and mouths. Each maiden has turquoise, lapis and apple coral embellishments added to their shawls in the form of pendants and sashes with star bursts added as well. Maiden carvings remind us of abundance, fertility and the power of feminine energy.
