Black Marble Medicine Bear by Hiram Peynetsa
A large black marble medicine bear with turquoise inlaid eyes and its nose to the ground - carved by Hiram Peynetsa - delivered to Sunshine Studio in late May of 2025. Hiram has added all the bells and whistles on this big bear - that's for sure! On the bear's left side - there is an abstract heart line added after the polish - standing out due to its mat contrast with four turquoise dots inlaid inside of spiraling triangles. Below the heart line on the left side is a small concave bear paw and claws. Then on the bear's right side - there is a striking Zuni sun face with six turquoise dots inlaid above it. The sun face is inlaid with bits of lapis, apple coral, jet and mother-of-pearl. An incised feather stands out as well as a larger bear paw that has a lapis inlaid paw pad. This bear could be your cornerstone bear - becoming the most important bear in your collection; the basis upon which all other carvings are built around. The medicine bear shape is thought to resemble a cave opening - depicting a bear coming out of hibernation and the pose suggests that the bear is sniffing the ground for healing herbs. The Zuni tribe view the bear as a powerful symbol of healing, protection, strength, and introspection. As the designated protector of the West, the bear is considered a vital spiritual guide and is a source of wisdom during times of change and transition.
