A striking jet hummingbird perched on a Picasso marble base with a gold-lip inlaid beak carved by Steven Natachu. The bird has its wings carved as one form in and upright pose - with feather rows incised on the wings and tail. The bird h as one turquoise inlaid eyes on its left side then has eleven pipestone dots inlaid on the wing. On the hummingbird's right side, there is a contrasting pipestone inlaid eye and nine turquoise dots inlaid at the tip of the wings. There is also Steven's signature inlay work on the bird's chest featuring bits of clam shell, jet, pipestone and cuprite bits shaped into an oval shape. The Zuni view the hummingbird as a powerful symbol of rain, fertility, and a bringer of life. According to Zuni and Hopi legends, hummingbirds intervened to help humans by convincing the gods to bring rain during times of drought and famine.
