Black Marble And Alabaster Raven, Double by Melvin Sandoval
A black marble and cream tinged alabaster raven double carved by the abstract artist Melvin Sandoval. Melvin has carved the pair so that they both look forwards though the black marble raven appears to be looking up at the viewer. The ravens both have wings carved in low relief on the sides of their bodies with the top part of the bodies coming to a point - behind the heads and right behind the offering bundle. The bundle is tightly encircling the bodies with lots of layers of sinew and at the center of the pair is a simple offering bundle featuring three turquoise beads surrounded by one coral bead and six San Felipe hand made melon shell heishi beads. This is a dynamically composed duo and in real life - there are white ravens. White ravens (typically leucistic, not albino) are predominantly found along the coast of British Columbia, Canada. A white raven paired with a black raven symbolizes the balance of opposites, such as light and dark, life and death, or truth and secrets. Together, they represent duality, transformation, and the harmony of opposing forces, often acting as a reminder that both positive and negative elements coexist in life.
