Alabaster Sea Turtle by Gilbert Lalio
A muted cream, red and raw sienna colored alabaster sea turtle carved by Gilbert Lonjose looking slightly to its right side with turquoise inlaid eyes. Gilbert has incise the shell's scuts as eight triangles - then he incised lines that run diagonally on each one. There are eight turquoise dots inlaid along the edge of the scuts with one turquoise dot placed at the center. Indigenous people recognize the turtle as the symbol of Mother Earth - some Native Americans believe that the turtle contributed to creation because the turtle dove into the primeval waters to retrieve mud to create Mother Earth. The turtle is regarded as a skillful navigator through life's difficulties. Turtle medicine teaches one to go with the flow.
