Pipestone Bird, Cardinal by Darrin Boone

$ 48.00

A detailed cardinal with turquoise inlaid eyes, orange tinged spiny oyster beak and jet pigment mask carved by Darrin Boone. Darrin carved the bird resting on a base made from the same stone so that the tail can flow freely downwards. There is also a small Zuni sun face inlaid to the left side of the base - created with bits of clam shell, jet, apple coral and Amazonite. There are nicely incised feather rows with vertical incised lines utilized to create feathers - like all around the cardinal's crest on the top of the head. Cardinals use their crests as a visual signal; it stands up when they're agitated or courting and lies flatter when they are calm. Cardinals represent devotion, loving relationships, courtship, and monogamy in Native American lore. Some tribes think cardinals are the harbinger of rain, while other tribes, like the southeastern tribes, associate good fortune and sun with them.
