Gayla Eriacho
Zuni Rock (travertine) Turtle With Hatchlings by Gayla Eriacho
A golden umber and grayish cream colored Zuni rock travertine parent turtle with two of its hatchlings carved on top from the same rock - all three have pen shell inlaid eyes. This is a signature carving for Gayla Eriacho - the sister of Orin Eriacho. Gayla has inlaid the two shells of the hatchlings with Zuni quarried azurite on the hatchling closest to the parent's face and azurite on the hatchling closest to the parent's tail. Animals with their offspring - no matter the species - depicts the bond that exists between the parent and the child. Indigenous people recognize the turtle as the symbol of Mother Earth - some Native Americans believe that the turtle contributed to creation because the turtle dove into the primeval waters to retrieve mud to create Mother Earth. The turtle is regarded as a skillful navigator through life's difficulties. Turtle medicine teaches one to go with the flow.
