Picasso Marble Sea Turtle by Jayne Quam
A dark bodied PIcasso marble sea turtle with turquoise inlaid eyes carved by Jayne Quam with the top of the carapace/shell inlaid with bits of stone and shell in Jayne's unique cloisonné style. Jayne inlaid bits of tijilite, lapis and striking pink, peach and red sienna colored jicarite along with clam and mollusk shell to create a lunar landscape. Jayne then inlaid three jet stripes on the back end of the turtle's shell and glued bits of chrysocolla all along the edge of the inlay work - that are later sanded smooth in the last stage of the artist's process. Indigenous people recognize the turtle as the symbol of Mother Earth - some Native Americans believe that the turtle contributed to creation because the turtle dove into the primeval waters to retrieve mud to create Mother Earth. The turtle is regarded as a skillful navigator through life's difficulties. Turtle medicine teaches one to go with the flow.
