Herbert Him
Serpentine Turtle by Herbert Him
A detailed muted sage and grayish forest green serpentine turtle with turquoise inlaid eyes carved by Herbert Him protecting the village. The turtle's convex carved shell is realistically showing the carapace with nicely delineated scuts with twenty four turquoise pigment dots inlaid in their centers. The turtle's head is turned slightly to its left side with its feet and claws carved in low relief. The village on the side of this rectangular carving are well defined as well - never appearing repetitive - only highly descriptive. We think this shows what an elder statesman of carving Herbert now is. Indigenous people recognize the turtle as the symbol of Mother Earth - some Native Americans believe that the turtle contributed to creation because the turtle dove into the primeval waters to retrieve mud to create Mother Earth. The turtle is regarded as a skillful navigator through life's difficulties. Turtle medicine teaches one to go with the flow.
