Enrike Leekya
Zuni Rock (travertine) Horse by Enrike Leekya
A gray, golden ocher and ocher veined Zuni rock, travertine horse carved by Enrike Leekya looking partially to its left side and up at the viewer with turquoise inlaid eyes. Enrike has inlaid pen shell hooves to the horse's feet. There are also two pen shell and turquoise feathers pinned to the horse's incised mane and tail with an apple coral dot. The horse represents the power of the animal world literally "harnessed" for the benefit of the human race. Horse medicine calls one to expand one's own potential abilities, tethering control of the environment, inter-species communication and offers us a good example of cooperation. The Zuni believe the horse has healing powers.
