Herbert Him
Abalone Frog by Herbert Him
An iridescent low-to-the-ground abalone frog staring up at the viewer with turquoise inlaid eyes - carved by Herbert Him. Herbert has incised a line down the center of the frog's back and carved the front feet in the round. There is a texture of sorts on the top of the frog's back created from the shell itself - so Herbert simply polished it. The bottom of the carving is the alizarin red and white side of the shell - also with lots of texture left. The Zuni believe the frog is a reminder that we are all the same - development wise - we begin as tiny fishlike creatures in the womb then we evolve from swimmers to creatures of the land. The frogs sings its song reminding us of our watery beginning.
