Lorandina Sheche
Serpentine Bobcat by Lorandina Sheche
A polished muted tan and brown spotted serpentine bobcat with jet inlaid eyes carved by Lorandina Sheche with two turquoise dots inlaid on both sides of the bobcat's body. This is a traditional depiction of the wildcat fetish of the chase - the 'hunter god of the south' - as described and drawn by Frank Hamilton Cushing on plate VI of the Second Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology from 1881. The Zuni honor the bobcat for being elusive, intelligent and a solitary and independent hunter.
