Lewis Malie
Antler Deer by Lewis Malie
A small prominent gray antler deer with a four point rack of horns carvedby Lewis Malie from one horn. The deer looks to its right side with concave eye sockets inlaid with jet pigment. Lewis has incised a partial oval around the eyes to give depth. Part of the outer horn is left on the base creating a lovely contrast with the legs carved in the round thanks in part to the base. Lewis has incised fur on the deer's body however; in contrast, he left the face, the ears and horns smooth. For the Native tribes of North America, the deer is a messenger, an animal of power, and a totem representing sensitivity, intuition and gentleness. The Zuni in particular believe the deer represents our ancestors so it is always a joyous day to see one and it's also a very significant occurrence.
