Rabbits

The rabbit represents virtue, serenity, and restrained passion, and is special guardian to women in child birth.  The rabbit's timidity and vulnerability in the wild associate it with a strong awareness of others as well as impulsivity and overeagerness.   It is sometimes seen as trickster rival to the coyote, but unlike the coyote, the rabbit's motivation for deception grows out of it's need to protect itself.  Rabbits have always been the most abundant animal hunted for food by the Zuni, and do not seek protection in groups but live as individuals.  Ceremonial hunts reflect the central role of rabbits in the survival of the Zuni over the centuries.
