Turquoise Maiden by Sandra Quandelacy
A turquoise carved maiden figure created by Sandra Quandelacy depicting a corn maiden on one side with a clam shell inlaid face and a mother on the opposite side with a pipestone face - both have jet pigment inlaid features and an apple coral dot pendant. The corn maiden has nicely incised corn rows with four dots inlaid in the rows to depict kernels - utilizing bits of apple coral turquoise and clam shell. The maidens also share a tablita headdress with a star burst and dragonfly incised on both sides - inlaid with jet. Maidens symbolize abundance, fertility and feminine energy and corn maidens are revered in Zuni for giving up their life to help sustain the Zuni tribe with their corn bodies.
