Picture Jasper Maiden Figure by Rhoda Quam, Deceased

$ 210.00

A yellow ocher colored picture jasper maiden figure carved by the now deceased Rhoda Quam - who sadly died in 2002. This unique carving features a large maiden on one side with a turquoise inlaid face, holding a prayer bowl with four turquoise corn cobs inlaid inside it. There is a smaller mother maiden on the back side of the larger maiden - also with a turquoise face. To the sides of the larger maidens, Rhoda has carved a corn maiden in low relief with incised corn rows and a melon shell inlaid face to the right side of the largest maiden. Then on the left side is a mother with a gold-lip inlaid face, balancing an olla/water jar on her head - incised in low relief. There are malachite, apple coral, melon shell and turquoise dots inlaid in the corn rows as well as two lapis dot star bursts under the prayer bowl. To the sides of the smaller turquoise faced maiden is two turquoise dot star bursts and two incised dragonflies inlaid with jet. Maidens symbolize abundance, fertility and feminine energy and corn maidens are revered in Zuni for giving up their life to help sustain the Zuni tribe with their corn bodies.
