Turquoise Maiden Figure by Sandra Quandelacy
A turquoise maiden figure with a grayish brown matrix carved by Sandra Quandelacy. Both maidens have incised features inlaid with jet pigment. Sandra created a corn maiden on one side with nicely incised corn rows and a maiden on the opposite side. The maidens share a whirl squash blossom hair style that signifies the two maidens are unmarried. There are two incised dragonflies hovering mid section on both sides of the maidens with two star bursts incised at the bottom - all are inlaid with jet pigment. Maidens symbolize abundance, fertility and feminine energy and the corn maiden is venerated in Zuni for giving up her life for the health of the community.
