$ 270.00

A golden ocher and brown streaked picture jasper maiden figure carved by the now deceased Rhoda Quam - who died in 2002. Rhoda has carved three mothers and one corn maiden at the top of the carving then placed one smaller child near the base. Rhoda is known for inlaying faces on her carvings and this figure utilizes bits of turquoise, lapis, apple coral, abalone and spiny oyster creating five striking figures. Dots also are utilized all over the carving to suggest star bursts, corn kernels, pendants and sashes - the stones used are turquoise, lapis, spiny oyster, and melon shell. There is one jet inlaid dragonfly placed between the small child and two mothers. Maidens symbolize abundance, fertility and feminine energy & the corn maiden is venerated in Zuni for giving up her life for the health of the community.
