Julia Norton, Deceased
Jet Turtle by Julia Norton, Deceased
A personable jet turtle with turquoise beaded eyes and jet pigment inlaid pupils carved by the now deceased Julia Norton - a Navajo carver who brought her work to Sunshine Studio and became an appreciated, esteemed carver along with her son-in-law; David Yazzie. Julia incised the scutes on the top of the shell and carved the feet in the round. Indigenous people recognize the turtle as the symbol of Mother Earth - some Native Americans believe that the turtle contributed to creation because the turtle dove into the primeval waters to retrieve mud to create Mother Earth. The turtle is regarded as a skillful navigator through life's difficulties. Turtle medicine teaches one to go with the flow.
