Cedar Animals Protecting The Village by Florentino Martinez
A cedar animal collective carved in detail by Florentino Martinez protecting the Zuni village. The title incised on the bottom of the carving is "The Protected." What we can make out is that there is a medicine bear, eagle, a mountain lion, a wolf and a howling coyote carved on two sides of the oval shaped base with the eagle and mole placed on the opposite side - all are protecting the Zuni Village they surround. The eagle has its wings spread wide encircling a sunken Kiva. To the side of the eagle's left wing is a mole inside a small underground opening - only its front claws and face peak out. To the right side of the eagle is a mountain lion with its wolf brother beside it. Florentino has the lion's tail carved in high relief - attaching to the village wall near its tip. There is an incised pattern all over the rocky ground with the Zuni village carved in the center with two small Kivas placed in front of it. This is almost a six directional figure but the carving is missing a badger. The gathering symbolizes the animals banding together for a holistic spiritual defense of the Zuni tribe - depicting the sacred balance of nature, and the continuous guardianship of the Zuni people. This carving can be bought immediately when it lists in the mailer and will also receive a courtesy fifteen percent discount when checking out, in the shopping cart.
