Antler Bird, Hummingbird, Double by Raymond Tsalate
An antler hummingbird with its chick carved by Ray Tsalate. The pair both have pen shell inlaid eyes and dark mother-of-pearl inlaid beaks. Ray also incised two lines on the bird's wings and five on the tail then he inlaid them with lapis pigment. Animals carved with their offspring, no matter the species - suggest the bond that exists between the parent and the child. The bird’s ability to travel freely above the earth, migrate over vast distances and occupy an astonishing array of terrestrial habitats make it a powerful symbol of freedom. The hummingbirds are revered by the Zuni - they consider them messengers who have the ability to stop time.
