Coral is a very unique mineral gemstone, in that it is formed from living matter. When the living matter dies, it leaves behind a skeleton, which is the part used by Zuni artists. Apple coral is the most common type of coral used in jewelry and carvings. This type of coral typically has a reddish-orange color to it. It can be found along the ocean floors near Indonesia, Taiwan, and southern China. In Zuni Fetishes, you're most likely to see apple coral used as an inlay, or in the offering bundle on top of an animal.
