Gayla Eriacho
Zuni Rock (travertine) Turtle With Hatchlings by Gayla Eriacho
A golden umber and grayish cream colored Zuni rock travertine parent turtle with two of its hatchlings carved on top from the same rock - all three have pen shell inlaid eyes. This is a signature carving for Gayla Eriacho - the sister of Orin Eriacho. Gayla has inlaid the two shells of the hatchling with Zuni quarried azurite/malachite on the hatchling closest to the parent's face and azurite on the hatchling closest to the parent's tail. Animals with their offspring - no matter the species - depicts the bond that exists between the parent and the child. Indigenous people recognize the turtle as the symbol of Mother Earth - some Native Americans believe that the turtle contributed to creation because the turtle dove into the primeval waters to retrieve mud to create Mother Earth. The turtle is regarded as a skillful navigator through life's difficulties. Turtle medicine teaches one to go with the flow.
