Antler Mole by Troy Sice
An exceptional cream and gray streaked elk antler mole carved by Troy Sice - delivered to Sunshine Studio in early May of 2024. Troy has placed the face in the porous gray and brown umber marrow area of the horn to great affect - it appears the mole just came out of the ground - with tiny black pen shell inlaid eyes and Mediterranean coral inlaid nose tip. There is a striking gold-lip feather inlaid to the top of the mole's head with a sterling silver pin - contrasting nicely with the prominent dark marrow face. The mole wears a raised double strand necklace - composed of eight coral and four serpentine dots on one strand and lapis, black pen shell, variscite and turquoise beads placed on the lower strand - all painstakingly hand made by the artist. The mole stands upright in an anthropomorphic pose with its pointy front paws carved in low relief - demonstratively pointing towards the sky in a prayerful manner. The mole wears an incredible robe graced with all kinds of bugs that the mole eats, thereby protecting the land that he resides under. The stones and shells used for the bugs are Kingman Mine turquoise, Mediterranean coral, pink mussel shell, Japanese coral and green serpentine with the incised feet and antennae inlaid with jet. There is a rounded border placed on the bottom edge of the robe - utilizing bits of red spiny oyster, pink mussel and pen shell, green serpentine, phosphosiderite, Orville Jack Mine turquoise, lapis, blue-green Fox Mine turquoise and Japanese coral. Moles share a connection with the energies of the earth, have knowledge of herbs, roots, minerals, seeds and rivers, are sensitive to touch and vibration and remind us all to turn inwards - allowing for introspection and awareness of the subtle energies and influences that shape our lives. The Zuni consider the mole to be one of the six directional animals they revere - he is the underground protector of Mother Earth and his directional color is black.
