Pipestone Frog by Michael Coble
An iron oxide red colored pipestone frog with turquoise inlaid eyes carved by Michael Coble perched on a rock. Michael has incised circles in low relief all over the frog's back and the he carved the legs in low relief then polished them. The round rock also has incised lines all over it - lines to describe water, we think. Frogs are the result of water so are associated with the prominence of rain and are used to encourage the growth of crops. Zuni believe the frog is a reminder that we are all the same - development wise - we begin as tiny fishlike creatures in the womb then we evolve from swimmers to creatures of the land. The frogs sings its song reminding us of our watery beginning.
