Septarian Nodule Medicine Bear by Lynn Quam
A large gray, muted olive green and crstalline gold septarian nodule medicine bear with turquoise inlaid eyes and double heart line - one on each side. Carved by Lynn Quam, the medicine bear is flat on its right side with more of a rounded form created on its left side. Lynn has added a Zuni sun face to both sides surrounded by eight turquoise inlaid dots. On the bear's right side, the sun face is created from a prominent bits of apple coral, then has a turquoise inlaid mouth and jet inlaid lines where as the sun face on the left is composed prominently of turquoise with a coral inlaid mouth and jet inlaid lines. The sun face is an ancient symbol in Zuni culture, representing the sacred Sun Father. The symbol's round motif depicts the sun with a forehead split down the middle to reflect the eternal balance between sunrise and sunset. The medicine bear shape is thought to resemble a cave opening - depicting a bear coming out of hibernation and the pose is the bear sniffing the ground for herbs. The bear is endowed with curative powers, strength, adaptability and courage - powers that can influence both the spiritual and physical realm.
