Peter Natachu, Jr., Deceased
Black Marble Turtle by Peter Natachu, Jr., Deceased
A striking black marble sea turtle with turquoise inlaid eyes carved by the now deceased Peter Natachu. Peter inlaid a fabulous Zuni sun face to the center of the turtle's shell, utilizing bits of clam, jet, piepestone and turquoise. Then Peter incised a ring of incised feathers all around the sun face - a striking addition. Indigenous people recognize the turtle as the symbol of Mother Earth - some Native Americans believe that the turtle contributed to creation because the turtle dove into the primeval waters to retrieve mud to create Mother Earth. The turtle is regarded as a skillful navigator through life's difficulties. Turtle medicine teaches one to go with the flow.
