Lapis Lazuli Bird, Peacock by Raymond Tsalate - Zuni Fetish
A beautiful semi opaque green travertine and lapis peacock carved by Ray Tsalate. The bird has turquoise and coral dots inlaid on both sides of the bird's raised tail and has a copper inlaid top crest. The crest feathers actually give the peacock its Latin name - called pavo cristatus - the crested pheasant. There is a small base created from spiny oyster that supports the bird with one gold-lip and copper flower inlaid to the left side of the peacock's body. While representing different meanings to different cultures, the peacock, with its unique beauty, makes it a symbol of power, strength, confidence, and even divinity.
