Orthoceras Maiden by Rhoda Quam, Deceased - Zuni Fetish

$ 250.00

A lean fossil orthoceras maiden figure carved by the now deceased Rhoda Quam - mounted to a turquoise oval disc for added stability. Rhoda placed two maiden on both sides - with faces inlaid in turquoise and spiny oyster. The smaller turquoise faced figure is a corn maiden. All four maidens have jet inlaid features and balance a water jar on the top of the their heads. There are coral, melon shell, turquoise and lapis dots inlaid as pendants, star bursts or in the corn rows - giving the eyes plenty of visual landing points. Also there are grayish fossil markings on both sides - a reminder of the nautiloid marine mollusks from the Paleozoic era - that are relatives of today's octopus and squid. Maidens symbolize abundance, fertility and feminine energy and the corn maiden is venerated in Zuni for giving up her life for the health of the community.
