Picasso Marble Six-Directional Figure by Michael Laweka - Zuni Fetish

$ 175.00

A tan, gray and cream colored Picasso marble six-directional figure carved by Michael Laweka protecting the village. The 6 animals represent the six directions the Zuni revere and the directions they are associated with. So there's a mountain lion that represents the North, a badger for the South, a wolf for the East, a bear for the West, the eagle represents the zenith and the mole represents the nadir underworld. The largest head at the top is the eagle - carved in the round looking up at the viewer with piercing eyes. To the eagle's left side is a mountain lion head. Next to the lion is a wolf and to the right side of the eagle is a bear. On the back side of the eagle is a badger with an incised badger stripe running down its visible body. Then to our surprise - we found a quarter inch in diameter tiny mole on the bottom of the carving. The five animals on top of the carving are all positioned around the village - that has fourteen inlaid dots to suggest the Piñon or Ponderosa pine vigas that held up the roofs.
