Carved by Faye Quandelacy the maiden double depicts a corn maiden on one side and a young woman on the opposite side. The pair share a squash blossom whorl hairdo - a style originally worn by the young Hopi maidens to show that they were unmarried. Maidens symbolize abundance, fertility and feminine energy & the corn maiden is venerated in Zuni for giving up her life for the health of the community.
