Picasso Marble Corn Maiden by Florentino Martinez

$ 400.00

A gray, brown & black veined corn maiden carved by Florentino Martinez rising out of its husk. There is a turquoise inlaid mouth & a brown vein that circles the head creating the eyes along with vertical incised slits. The corn maiden wears a tablita style head dress that has 3 turquoise dots as well as 2 incised dragonflies and one tadpole(on both sides). There are nicely incised corn rows with four husks folding back at the bottom of the carving. How Florentino can create these incredibly detailed works of art are beyond the imagination - it requires precise understanding of positive/negative space for sure. NOTE: The carving is dated 2017. The corn maiden is venerated in Zuni for giving up her life for the health of the community.
