Antler, Chrysoprase, Copper & MOP Butterfly Maiden by Raymond Tsalate

$ 1,400.00

An elaborate cream and gray antler butterfly maiden with penn shell inlaid eyes, a coral mouth & chrysoprase wings carved by Raymond Tsalate. The maiden wears a tablita style headdress with two lapis dots on the front with her hair displayed on the back side in a bun with a turquoise 'clasp' at its center. The maiden 'floats' thanks to a thin gage of copper wire - over a mother-of-pearl corn cob with copper inlaid stalks, a gold-lip squash blossom with copper 'vines', an Afghanistan travertine 'leaf' as well as hammered out copper beans - all inlaid to the horn base. The butterfly maiden dance is a dance performed by an unmasked maiden; petitioning for rain, and health for all living things, thanking the beautiful butterfly for pollinating the corn. The butterfly maiden represents the butterflies that pollinate the corn, helping to bring the crop to fruition.
