Fish Rock (Serpentine) Butterfly Dancer by Florentino Martinez - Zuni Fetish
An outstanding cream and gray colored fish rock serpentine butterfly dancer inlaid to a small softly rounded black marble base for added stability. Carved by Florentino Martinez, there are two wings created from the same rock with nine lines incised on both the front and back of them - inlaid with jet slip and one coral dot at the top of each line. After Florentino inlaid the two wings, he glued coral chips all around their juncture to the body. The face treatment is quite elaborate too - there are dark Picasso marble inlaid antennae and turquoise slit style inlaid eyes. Then Florentino has incised three horizontal lines and nine small horizontal slits under the eyes, then inlaid them with a jet slip. The facial treatment seems very similar to the Kokoshi dancers - the young male initiates that dance in a similar mask before they are allowed to join their prospective clans. For just like the Kokoshi; there is a beard that flows downwards to the dancer's chest. The dancer's kilt is also decorated with jet inlaid lines/embellishments. There are six turquoise dots added to the dancer's left arm as jewelry and the dancer holds a turquoise leaf. There are six coral dots added to the right arm and the dancer holds a rattle made from the same stone in this hand. This carving adds up to a very thoughtfully conceived dancer. The butterfly dance is a thanksgiving ceremonial dance for the harvest, chiefly for the corn crop. The Butterfly Dance is a petition for rain, good health, and long life for all living things. The dance also recognizes the butterfly for its beauty and its contribution to pollinating plant life.
