Black Marble Medicine Bear by Jonathan Natewa
A black marble medicine bear with turquoise inlaid eyes carved by Jonathan Natewa. Jonothan has incised decorative motifs inspired from Pendleton blankets on the bear's sides and face, then he left those areas unpolished so that the motifs stand out from the polished black background. The medicine bear shape is thought to resemble a cave opening - depicting a bear coming out of hibernation & the pose is the bear sniffing the ground for healing herbs. The Zuni believe the bear is endowed with curative powers, strength, adaptability & courage - powers that can influence both the spiritual & physical realm.
